Root Canal Therapy
When the inner nerve of a tooth, known as the pulp, becomes damaged or dies (often accompanied by infection and/or pain), it becomes necessary to undergo endodontic therapy, commonly referred to as a root canal treatment. The primary objective of this procedure is to eliminate the infected, compromised, or non-vital pulp from the tooth. Inside the tooth, there are canals and a pulp chamber that house nerves and blood vessels responsible for its nourishment.
The root canal treatment involves the extraction of these tissues, followed by a thorough cleansing, decontamination, and sealing of the canals. Typically, the damage to the pulp is attributed to bacteria that penetrate the tooth through deep cavities, fissures, or deteriorating fillings. Root canal treatment may also be recommended following a traumatic dental injury.
